Alphabet - Letters That Look The Same, But Sound Different

Back to work!

Some letters in the Cyrillic alphabet look like the ones we're used to, but sound different.

In the case of today's letters, they all sound like a Roman letter.

В в - Sounds like the Roman V/v

Е е - Sounds like the Roman Y/y

Н н - Sounds like the Roman N/n

Р р - Sounds like the Roman R/r - this is a rolled 'R/r"

С с - Sounds like the Roman S/s

A Little Different:

У у - Sounds like the Roman double OO/oo - like in boot

Х хSounds like the Roman H/h . . . but doesn't. It's more like the ck sound in words like Bach

Alphabet - Letters That Look & Sound The Same

Hey folks!

So let's continue with the alphabet:

Some letters in the alphabet look the same and sound the same as in our (Roman) alphabet. These are:
  • Т т
  • O o
  • М м
  • К к
  • А а

For those in North America, I'm embarrassed to say that I remember these letters based on "T.O.M.K.A. " which is very close to "Tom-Kat" referring to the previous couple of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

Language Basics: The Alphabet

We've been quite busy recently so we haven't been keeping up with the Russian Language like we should.

So let's dive back in!

The Language

In Canada we use the Roman alphabet. In Russia they use the Cyrillic alphabet, which is part of the East Slavic Group of Slavonic languages, and are somewhat similar to Ukrainian and Belarusian languages.

In the Cyrillic alphabet there are 33 letters comprised of 10 vowels, 21 consonants and 2 signs (hard and soft).

This photo shows the printed and calligraphic signs for each letter.

Tomorrow we'll start breaking the alphabet down so we can learn it together.
